Balancing Your Doshas: A Guide to Ayurveda, Yoga’s Ancient Sister Science

Balancing your doshas

After an unforgettable 7-day yoga retreat in Nosara, Costa Rica—filled with sunrise yoga, nightly sound baths, immersive adventures, and even one-on-one Ayurvedic consultations—many of us returned home with a deep curiosity about balancing your doshas. Which inspired us to share what we learned with you! So, have you ever wondered: what are doshas, and how do they impact our lives both on and off the mat?

Let’s explore what we learned from the doctor in Costa Rica about the basics of Ayurveda, the ancient sister science to yoga, and how understanding and balancing your doshas can bring harmony to your body, mind, and spirit.

What is Ayurveda?

The definition of Ayurveda is “the science of life,” is a 5,000-year-old system of natural healing rooted in the Vedic tradition of India. It works hand-in-hand with yoga and is focused on achieving optimal health through balance and alignment with nature’s rhythms. Therefore, part of the balance includes adding a consistent yoga practice to your routine. But there’s more to it than that. We also need to balance what we eat, the style of yoga that we practice and the stage of life that we are in.

Ayurveda teaches that each person has a unique mind-body constitution, consisting of the three doshas, and that well-being depends on maintaining equilibrium among these energies, or doshas. Many of us are dominant in one or two of them and need to be mindful of balancing our doshas.

The Three Doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha

According to Ayurveda, there are three primary doshas—VataPitta, and Kapha—each composed of the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, and ether). Everyone has a unique combination of these doshas, but one or two typically dominate. To create balance, we need to take actions that create equilibrium in our doshas.

Vata: Air + Ether

Creative, energetic, and quick-thinking, Vata types thrive on movement. When out of balance, they may feel anxious, scattered, or experience dryness and poor circulation.

Pitta: Fire + Water

Ambitious, focused, and sharp, Pittas are natural leaders. Out of balance, they may become irritable, overheated, or suffer from inflammation.

Kapha: Earth + Water

Grounded, compassionate, and calm, Kaphas are the nurturers. Imbalance can lead to lethargy, congestion, and emotional heaviness.

Understanding which dosha is dominant in your constitution is the first step toward balancing your doshas. You can take a quiz HERE to learn your unique constitution.

How to Balance Your Doshas

Our retreat in Nosara highlighted how lifestyle, diet, and self-care can help restore balance. Here are some general tips:

For Vata Balance:

  • Favor warm, moist, grounding, cooked foods (soups, stews)
  • Avoid cooling foods
  • Stick to a regular routine
  • Practice slow, mindful yoga. Like Earth Yin, that you can learn about HERE
  • Prioritize rest and relaxation

For Pitta Balance:

  • Cooling, calming and grounding practices are great for balancing Pitta
  • Eat cooling foods (cucumbers, leafy greens)
  • Avoid spicy, salty and sour foods
  • Avoid overexertion
  • Practice calming yoga like Yin or Yoga Nidra
  • Spend time in nature, listen to soothing music and create a bedtime routine

For Kapha Balance:
